Books provide essential guidance
for genealogists, and many original sources are now in print. Thousands of
genealogical books are now available; these pages describe titles from some of
the major publishers. The most important books listed here are
undoubtedly Raymond's series of British Genealogical Library Guides. Why?
Because they provide the essential guidance you need in order to find your way
through the maze of printed books and microfiche that are available in
libraries. There are hundreds of thousands of works out there, each one of which
may have information relevant to your family history. How are you going to
identify those which are relevant without an adequate listing?
The most popular books on this site are Raymond's
series of F.F.H.S. Web Directories, and especially Family History on the Web.
These provide expert guidance to the most useful web sites currently available,
and are far more useful than the alternative of spending hours on search engines
that throw hundreds of irrelevant sites at you.
The latest book
from Stuart Raymond is Words from Wills and other probate records (on the
F.F.H.S. page below). If you are trying to read old wills and other probate
records, then you are going to come across archaic terms that you do not
understand. Words from wills defines numerous terms found in probate records of
the period 1500-1800.
