British Genealogical Library Guides
(formerly British Genealogical Bibliographies)

One of the first things a researcher should do is to identify all those books and journal articles which are likely to assist research. Easier said than done, you might say, given the millions of books currently available. But if a detailed bibliography, that is, a list of books, exists, that must surely be the first place to look. In fact, a bibliography is more useful than any other book, since it enables you to identify all the others.

The aim of British Genealogical Library Guides is, ultimately, to list every book, microfiche, journal article, etc., that is likely to be of use to the genealogist. Each volume will enable researchers to work systematically through all the published material before embarking on archival research. The items listed are mostly widely available in libraries throughout the world; indeed, the first two volumes in the series were actually written in Geelong, Australia. The series is therefore particularly useful to those who live at a distance from their ancestral homes.
